Nintendo and Niantic have announced that they are partnering to create a series of apps that “combine Niantic’s real-world AR technology with Nintendo’s beloved characters” in order to “make walking more fun.” The first new collaboration between Nintendo and Niantic is for a mobile Pikmin AR game that will launch globally later in 2021. It will be the first title created by Niantic Tokyo Studio since its establishment in April 2018, and Niantic will also be the publisher of the title. Niantic is of course also the developer of global smash hit Pokémon GO.
Niantic CEO John Hanke offered the following about this new partnership: “As we continue to expand our games portfolio, it was a natural next step to team up with Nintendo. We’re looking forward to shaping the future of AR together, bringing Nintendo’s beloved game characters to life for mobile game players around the world.”
Meanwhile, Nintendo Fellow and Representative Director Shigeru Miyamoto stated: “Niantic’s AR technology has made it possible for us to experience the world as if Pikmin are secretly living all around us. Based on the theme of making walking fun, our mission is to provide people a new experience that’s different from traditional games. We hope that the Pikmin and this app will become a partner in your life.”
Pre-registration for the game is open now.

Do you think the same magic that made Pokémon GO into a mega success might rub off a little on a mobile Pikmin AR game or the other Nintendo projects Niantic has in the works? Could we all soon be living in a world where Nintendo is the main reason we’re excited to walk around outside? Time will tell!
