The ripple effects of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic continue to reach far and wide. To list a few: developers and publishers large and small had to readjust to new work-at-home orders on short notice; yearly events have been pushed back or cancelled outright; release dates for upcoming video games continue to see delays. For the latter, we have yet another game whose incoming launch is now disrupted: PlatinumGames’ The Wonderful 101: Remastered. Platinum initially scheduled its release for May 19 in North America and May 22 for Europe; while this should still be the case for digital storefronts, the publisher has announced new dates for the physical versions’ launch into the summer season.
COVID-19 bumps yet another game launch
In a backer-only update on Kickstarter today, PlatinumGames addressed the growing concerns surrounding the game’s impending release. Due to the pandemic, retail copies for The Wonderful 101: Remastered won’t become available until June 30th in North America and July 3rd in Europe. Backer rewards are the team’s priority, but complications in distribution may lead to backers not receiving their copies until after the game launches in stores.
To make up for this unforeseen shortcoming, Platinum will provide all physical backers Steam keys for The Wonderful 101: Remastered. While a token of appreciation so that everyone can enjoy the game at the same time, only those with gaming PCs will be able to take advantage of this. As a physical Switch version backer myself, it does bum me out that I’ll have to wait another month or so for my hard copy. But hey, given the circumstances with COVID-19, it couldn’t be helped.
As of now, digital codes on all platforms are on track for distribution starting on May 7th.
Nintendo first published The Wonderful 101 as a Wii U exclusive in 2013. The remastered version is PlatinumGames’ foray into self-publishing, launching on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC next month.
