Since the start of February, PlatinumGames had been teasing major new projects at a “Platinum 4” website. The first announcement was The Wonderful 101: Remastered, which had a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign as expected. Second came word of Project G.G., a new giant hero game being directed by Hideki Kamiya that seems to be offering epic kaiju showdowns. Third was the formal announcement of the new PlatinumGames Tokyo studio, which will push the game studio’s development efforts forward in many new ways. Now, at last, we have the final Platinum 4 announcement: a brand new “Sol Cresta” arcade game… that is actually an April Fools’ Day joke. Cool cool cool cool cool cool cool.
Going to the Platinum 4 website and clicking on its new announcement for the fourth project takes you to the below YouTube video:
PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya has admitted on Twitter, per Siliconera translation, that the alleged “Sol Cresta” video game is an April Fools’ Day joke, stating: “We, PlatinumGames, went all-out for this year’s April Fools’ again. While I’m aware that we’re living in troubled times, as an entertainer there’s a part of me that just wants to cheer you all up, even if it’s just a little. And a big thank you goes out to the folks at Hamster (rights owner of Terra Cresta arcade game) for their cooperation (in creating the joke).”
Kamiya additionally said that “this time it was ‘make something that will get us (me?) excited’ and we went full stupid with it.” Mission complete, I guess? “Sol Cresta” is pretty stupid and exceedingly disappointing, but it’s a classic troll move for Kamiya.
Well, at least PlatinumGames’ Project G.G. is still looking pretty awesome.
