After two full days of intense play, eight Super Smash Bros. Melee competitors have reached the final hours of the EVO 2013 tournament in Las Vegas. Tomorrow, EVO 2013 will conclude their Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and King of Fighters XIII competitions.

For Super Smash Bros. Melee, the finals begin at 12pm PST, right before a special presentation for Injustice: Gods Among Us. In the Melee finals are competitors Hungrybox, Mew2King, Dr. Peepee, Wobbles, Mango, Armada, Ice, and Shroomed.

Armada, a European who mains Peach and who took home 1st place at the international fighting game tournament Apex 2013 this past January, will be entering the final day of competition from the Loser’s Bracket alongside Mango, Ice, and Shroomed, the underdog vying for a Grand Finals spot with Dr. Mario.

Dr. Peepee and Mew2King, who placed 2nd and 3rd place at Apex 2013, respectively, will enter on the Winner’s side with Hungrybox and Wobbles.

This is the first time Super Smash Bros. has been featured at an EVO event in several years. Super Smash Bros. Melee was added after a charity drive proved successful for the Melee community, with almost $95,000 donated to breast cancer research. Only Super Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 had more people enter than Melee at this year’s event.

A week before the competition, controversy threw Melee’s chances to shine in the EVO spotlight in jeopardy due to Nintendo banning EVO from streaming Smash’s event. Fortunately, a swift reversal was made hours later after quick fan backlash turned sour for the video game giant.

EVO 2013’s Super Smash Bros. Melee event is a one-versus-one competition. Tournament sets are Best of Three (although later rounds of competition on Sunday will be longer). Each player has four stocks and play within an 8 minute time limit. Rules denote which stages are legal to be picked for which games. And, of course, all characters are legal.

The finals for King of Fighters XIII, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Super Street Fighter IV, as well as special presentations for Injustice, Killer Instinct, and other games, begin at 10 am PST on Sunday, July 14th onĀ Official EVO Stream 1.
