PlayStation 3 Portable Vita PSP PS3 PS store remains open Jim Ryan

President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan has pulled a complete 180 on a recent major announcement. The PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable (PSP), and PlayStation Vita digital stores were set to shut down this summer, but Ryan has now announced that the PS3 and Vita stores will stay open and continue to operate normally. The functionality to purchase games digitally on PSP will still retire on July 2, 2021 as previously planned.

Nonetheless, keeping the PlayStation 3 and Vita digital stores open is a huge win for games preservation, because it means a tremendous number of rare games and games only accessible on those platforms will continue to exist and be readily accessed. You won’t be losing quirky digital exclusives, and you won’t be losing fast and cheap access to the likes of the Mega Man Legends games or any number of other high-quality retro games.

Jim Ryan explains that they are backtracking on shuttering the stores specifically because of the outcry that followed from the closure announcement:

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

Prior to this new announcement, we had compiled a sweeping list of retro games on the various PlayStation stores that might be of interest to Nintendo gamers, and we still heartily recommend all of them right this instant. The good news is that now you’re not on a time limit to buy them (pending individual publisher discretion, as per usual). Although, honestly, I already loaded up my Vita with as many PlayStation 1 RPGs and as much Mega Man Legends as it could fit.

How do you feel about the PlayStation 3 and Vita digital stores staying open?
