Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl tips and tricks guide

The fourth generation of Pokémon games has returned, as Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are now available on Nintendo Switch. While some may be taking a nostalgic trip back to the Sinnoh region, this might be your first time experiencing these fantastic games. With that in mind, there’s a chance you could use some assistance during your adventure, and lucky for you, generation four just so happens to be my favorite. This guide will offer some tips and tricks to get you prepared for your Sinnoh adventure in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

1. Hold R to close your Pokétch.

Early on in your adventure, a man in Jubliffe City will give you the Pokétch, a watch of sorts that contains useful apps. To use this feature, simply press the R button, but the game doesn’t really tell you how to close it. At first, it took me a while to figure out how to shut it down, which became annoying as it blocks the top right of the screen. However, holding the R button will close the Pokétch, allowing you to see everything properly again. It’s also worth mentioning that you should speak to every NPC, as sometimes you will be given a new app for your Pokétch. We will be going over the Pokétch and its apps in a separate guide, so please stay tuned for that.

2. Collect and plant berries.

Throughout the Sinnoh region, you will notice a variety of plants containing berries. Collect these when you see them, as you are then able to plant a berry to receive even more. There are a lot of Pokémon scattered throughout the game that might cause status effects, so having a ton of berries on hand will be useful. You can start to find berries when you reach Floaroma Town, and you can collect the watering can to use on them from the Berry Shop located above the Pokémon Center. Additionally, you can trade berries at the shop to receive more stickers for the Ball Capsules / Capsule Decoration feature. This ranks among the simplest Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl tips and tricks, but it’s still worth stating.

3. Smother trees with Honey to find rare Pokémon.

Again in Floaroma Town, you unlock the ability to cover in-game trees with Honey. You’ll want to stock up on Honey, as covering trees with it will allow you to find rare Pokémon. There are 21 Honey Trees in the game, which will present you with the opportunity to receive Pokémon such as Aipom, Cherubi, Heracross, and, if you’re lucky, Munchlax. After covering your victim in honey, you must wait six hours, and if successful, the tree will start shaking slightly.

Another of our important Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl tips and tricks: You’re unable to tamper with the Nintendo Switch’s clock, so don’t try to manipulate this feature, as you will be locked out of in-game events for 24 hours. Also, failing to check on a tree within 24 hours will void it, removing the chance of finding a Pokémon and losing your well-earned Honey.

4. Take advantage of the Grand Underground.

Before the second gym, you are able to receive the Explorer’s Kit from the Underground Man. To accomplish this, simply enter the house next to the Pokémon Center in Eterna City and speak to the old man. This will then allow you to enter the Grand Underground for the first time, a series of tunnels that allow you to obtain rare items such as fossils, as well as capture rare Pokémon in a new feature exclusive to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl called hideaways. For instance, on my first visit, I was able to capture the likes of Swablu by exploring the Fountainspring Cave hideaway. We will have a full Grand Underground guide available in the near future.

5. Talk to every NPC.

The Pokémon series is notorious for hiding items behind specific NPC interactions, and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are no exception. While exploring the game’s many towns and routes, be sure to check out every house to discover potentially useful items, such as TMs and Held Items. Additionally, it’s imperative that you pick up any items scattered throughout the overworld, as you may find something particularly useful.
