Yesterday’s Pokémon Presents filled us in on tons of new details about Pokémon Legends: Arceus. There are research missions to accept, items to craft, and violent, rampaging Pokémon to battle. However, one core feature that has been there since the beginning of the series is absent. The game’s official website has confirmed what we already suspected: there are no Link Battles in Legends: Arceus.
No Link Battles for Legends: Arceus
The Pokémon Company previously announced there would be no Ranked Battles in Legends: Arceus or the Gen 4 remakes. The latter will still have Link Battles, but the official website confirms that Legends will not.
Link Battles with other players are not available in this game. Trading Pokémon with other players will require the use of the Nintendo Switch system’s communication features. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use certain features.
As we previously reported, you will be able to trade Pokémon with other players, but battling with them is a no-go. Legends: Arceus features a drastically different battle style than normal games. You can attack or be attacked multiple times in a row, depending on your speed stat. There are also new Agile and Strong fighting styles that alter the power and speed of your Pokémon.
All of these changes could hypothetically create a new and exciting competitive scene, but Game Freak isn’t interested. Perhaps it simply isn’t balanced for Link Battles? The footage we’ve seen so far has focused on battles against powerful wild Pokémon, not other trainers in-game. In fact, “Pokémon Trainer” isn’t even a recognized profession in the Hisui Region at this time.
