Pokemon Sword and Shield Metacritic review score

The fated day is almost here. Game Freak officially releases Pokémon Sword and Shield tomorrow. These games have been surrounded by controversy in recent months, so many are keen to see how they’ll be received. The lack of a National Dex and reports of technical issues have many people feeling apprehensive. That said, the early review scores that have come in are… largely positive. Metacritic has it rated at 81/100 based on 19 reviews. 15 of those are positive and 4 are mixed. That’s a pretty small sample size thanks to Game Freak holding back most of their review codes until launch day. But it’s what we have to work with.

Pokémon Sword and Shield reviews

Reviews praise the game’s more streamlined nature and the increased freedom it brings. New features like Dynamaxing were also well received. Critics were also generally impressed by the new Pokémon of the Galar region. Of course, it’s not all sunshine and roses. Complaints include the lack of a National Dex, underutilization of new features, technical hiccups, and pacing issues. Still, only four review scores came in below 80 in this first batch. Sword and Shield are trailing behind the average Metacritic score for Pokémon, but not by a huge amount. You can check out a selection of these scores below.
