With 2019 in the rearview mirror, Nintendo has just released its financial report for the past quarter. It’s packed with tons of juicy info about the company’s lucrative holiday season, including some impressive software sales numbers. The biggest game this holiday season was easily Pokémon Sword and Shield. The twin games faced some controversy at launch, but they were ultimately pretty well-received. When it comes to the sales data, that’s a huge understatement! The latest Pokémon adventures combined for over 16 million copies sold in less than two months!
Pokémon Sword and Shield sales pass 16 million
Pokémon Sword and Shield made their debut on November 15. This new report covers the period from October 1 through December 31. With another month under their belt since then, who knows how high the total could be? Still, that 16 million is incredibly impressive at this early stage. To put it into perspective, Game Freak has averaged about 16 million total sales for each new duo of games over the past few generations.
These new Switch games are easily on pace to be the highest-selling since Gold and Silver. In fact, it’s conceivable that they could even pass up generation two. Popular Nintendo Switch games typically have a long tail, so you can expect the Pokémon Sword and Shield sales total to keep rising. 16 million is just the beginning.
