Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution trailer nostalgic

A new Japanese trailer for Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is here. And oh man — this thing is a total nostalgia fest. My best friend and I saw Mewtwo Strikes Back as kids, and while I never thought it was some incredible movie, it was definitely awesome to see Ash and Pikachu and the rest on the big screen.

This new trailer highlights all the classic scenes we remember from that movie, except now animated into three dimensions. It also randomly features a song from Rita Ora again. I guess they’re getting along pretty well these days.

Honestly, the human characters and their faces creep me out a little bit. They’re a bit too much like soulless clay mutants. But the Pokémon themselves look outstanding, especially Blastoise. Seeing the showdown between the regular Pokémon and Mewtwo’s Pokémon is still dramatic, and anyone who saw the original movie knows what’s going on when those tears start flying around. (Even though it made no sense back then and also now.)

Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution releases in Japan on July 12. There still seems to be no official word on an international release, but rest assured it will happen. Where there is money to be made — anything is possible!
