Shigesato Itoi is the creator of the Mother / EarthBound series and the owner of the company Hobonichi. That company is currently undergoing a “Hobonichi Mother Project,” a line of products based on the video game series. It already announced a script book for the games coming out at the end of the year, and now it has also dropped a release date for a tribute “official comic” collection. Titled Pollyanna, this anthology will be available at the Hobonichi store on June 11 and receive a wider release on June 25. It will costs ¥2,640, or about $24.50 at the time of writing. Check out the official trailer here:
It will feature contributions from 35 different manga artists and other creators. Pollyanna will also include illustrations, gags, and stickers. It will cover characters and events from all three Mother games. Some of the bigger names involved include Inio Asano (Goodnight Punpun), Keiichi Arai (Nichijou), and Toby Fox (Undertale). There’s no word yet on a localization, but if it sells well and if we bug Reggie enough, perhaps one day someone might think about it.
Notably, the announcement of this book explains why the company was recently seeking manga artists who like this franchise.
“Pollyanna” is a recurring tune in the Mother / EarthBound series and a fan favorite. The version with lyrics is about believing in the good in the world and in yourself, and the tune itself is bouncy and fun. Give it a listen.
It’s fitting that this is the name of an official collaboration of art dedicated to this particular series. One of the major themes of Mother is that the protagonist must overcome self-doubt and learn to love the world he’s saving. In many ways “Pollyanna” is emblematic of the series itself, and I can’t think of a better title for this tribute.
