Three new SNES titles and one NES title are coming to Nintendo Switch Online on Feb. 17, including Doomsday Warrior, Psycho Dream, and Prehistorik Man from SNES and Fire ‘n Ice from NES. You will notice that none of these games are EarthBound or Super Mario RPG, regrettably. However, Psycho Dream is noteworthy for being a “reality-bending” action platformer that was only ever available in Japan until now. Players will battle through a fantasy game called Legend of the Fallen Capital in a virtual world in order to rescue a friend and escape to reality.
Meanwhile, Doomsday Warrior has the most ’90s game description imaginable, so we’ll just let Nintendo PR do the talking: “It’s the Doomsday Warrior versus the Doom Squad! This action game features an evil sorcerer who has recruited seven warriors to take over Earth. But one of the Doom Squad has resisted the influence and now stands against the rest as the Doomsday Warrior!” Excellent. Prehistorik Man then is a colorful platformer, also par for the course for the era, while Fire ‘n Ice is a puzzle platformer.
If you’re curious, Nintendo Switch Online in Japan will be receiving a slightly different group of games as usual: Psycho Dream, Shin Megami Tensei II, and Mario’s Super Picross from Super Famicom and Solomon’s Key 2 (aka Fire ‘n Ice) from Famicom. Notably, Nintendo Switch Online users in North America already received Mario’s Super Picross as a SNES game in September 2020, marking the game’s official debut in North America.
