Oh, Mother 3. Perhaps more than any other game in Nintendo’s catalog, fans in the West have requested this title time and time again. Ever since this sequel to the cult classic EarthBound (Mother 2) released for the Game Boy Advance in 2006, it has been the White Whale for Nintendo gamers outside of Japan. Former president and COO Reggie Fils-Aimé is no stranger to requests, even setting a reporter on fire at E3 2014 at the mere mention of the game. And while he’s been retired since April, it seems that brutal murder is still not a deterrent for eager fans.
Reggie’s recent lecture at Cornell University hasn’t seen full uploads online yet, but clips from it have been surfacing. In one uploaded recently, a fearless truth-seeker asks “do you think that the West will ever be able to receive Mother 3?” He asks this despite knowledge of the game’s presence in Reggie’s nightmares.
Reggie smiles, clearly holding back homicidal rage, and responds, “I actually thought I would make it through a presentation… and not be asked about Mother 3.” He follows this up with a sentence that I’m sure he’s wanted to say for a very long time: “Luckily for me, this is a decision that I’m no longer part of.” That student got roasted in a less literal way, but he was indeed burned by the Regginator.
So, it seems Reggie is having a fun retirement.
What do you think of all this? Are you still waiting for Mother 3 to come to the West? Are you willing to be engulfed in flames over it? Let us know!
