A lot of news was dropped in that massive Nintendo Direct last month. Of the many announcements, one that got me especially excited was the news that Return of the Obra Dinn would be coming to Nintendo Switch. Now, a tweet from developer Lucas Pope confirms that the game will launch on the Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 18.
Originally released for PC via Steam on Oct 18 of last year, Return of the Obra Dinn is an incredibly inventive, story-driven mystery game with a gorgeous art style. The entire game is rendered in a blocky, two-tone aesthetic that looks like someone made a 3D adventure game for the Game Boy.
The game sees you playing as an insurance investigator for the East India Company’s London office, who’s been sent to investigate the disappearance of the merchant ship Obra Dinn in 1803. With the crew gone and the ship in tatters, you’ll need to look for clues to the final moments of the ship and its passengers in order to gauge what happened to each member of the crew, learn who is who, and find out why the Obra Dinn ultimately got lost at sea.
Coming from the mind behind the bleak passport simulator that is Papers, Please, Return of the Obra Dinn is an equally dark and contemplative game that delivers an engaging story in an incredibly unique way. You can experience the mystery of the Obra Dinn yourself when the game launches for Nintendo Switch on Oct 18.
