Return of the Obra Dinn

I’ve always been a fan of mystery and puzzle games, so I’m a bit annoyed with myself that I’ve not yet played Return of the Obra Dinn. Thankfully, Nintendo has given me a push towards doing so, as it announced tonight that the game is coming to Switch this fall.

If you’ve not heard of Return of the Obra Dinn, you’re missing out. A stylish, mystery adventure, you play as an insurance inspector, tasked with figuring out what happened aboard the eponymous vessel. Despite setting sail with over 50 crew members, it never made it to its final destination. It’s your job to piece together exactly what happened on the ship. You do this by jumping back in time to relive each crew member’s final moments. Based on what you see and the clues you find, you have to identify each crew member, how they perished, and if applicable, who their killer is.

Return of the Obra Dinn also gained recognition as a very beautiful game, utilizing a monochromatic palette meant to mimic that of early computers. And in case you’re wondering about the quality of the game, Obra Dinn was designed by Lucas Pope, best known for the also incredible Papers, Please. When it launched last year, it won numerous awards, such as “Best Art Direction” from The Game Awards, and “Grand Prize” and the Independent Games Festival.

If you have any interest in mystery games, you owe it to yourself to check out Return of the Obra Dinn. By all accounts, it’s definitely worth it. You can join me on my voyage to the Obra Dinn when it launches on Switch later this fall.
