Revealed in an epic trailer this past Monday, Fire Emblem newcomer Robin returns to the spotlight in today’s official Smash Bros. update. In the trailer, we saw both the male and female Robins wielding both swords and magical books. With today’s update, Sakurai takes some time to discuss how this new addition to the Smash roster wages war.

Pic of the day. The Levin sword and tomes are Robin’s life lines. The Levin sword can be activated by using smash attacks — you can even activate these moves in midair! However, just like in the original game, the Levin sword can be used only a limited number of times before it breaks, at which point it takes some time to regenerate. When the Levin sword is unavailable, Robin fights using the bronze sword.

Robin will shine in the hands of a resource-management master. Robin’s tomes and Levin sword have limited usage, so you\’ll have to watch your spell count and how much time you have left with your precious Levin sword. Thankfully, Robin has a back-up while the Levin is on cooldown. How effective the bronze sword is remains to be seen.

The way Robin launches Arcfire is kind of crazy – he or she calls down a bolt of flame from above, then launches a pillar of fire! By the way, Robin’s tome changes with each special attack.

So it seems Robin’s moveset will change dramatically over the course of the set – both by the activation and eventual loss of the Levin sword and the limited usage of the several magical spells, like ArcThunder, available as specials. The availability of tomes, however, seems to be still unclear. How long are spells usable until they are burned out?
