Back in May, known leaker Zippo came around with a claim that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 would finally be coming back, and the leaker was totally proven right when Sonic Origins was announced at Sonic Central later that month. Another claim Zippo made was that a new 2D Metroid game was finished with development at MercurySteam, which again seemingly proved accurate when Nintendo revealed Metroid Dread at E3 2021. As such, it’s fair to say that Zippo leaks carry weight, and this time the leaker claims to have sources that state an animated Donkey Kong project is in development — in addition to more multimedia plans.
Donkey Kong animation and multimedia expansion
This new leak comes on the back of a separate leak from May that has yet to be verified — that a new Donkey Kong game is in development internally at Nintendo. Though that particular leak hasn’t been confirmed, it’s been corroborated by enough sources that it seems legitimate. So with that in mind, Zippo adds this about a new animated Donkey Kong project:
I’ve been told by multiple people that Donkey Kong is the next franchise in line to follow Mario in Nintendo’s push for their game franchises to become multimedia juggernauts.
Donkey and co. aren’t just getting a new game, they’re getting animation (Before this catches fire, my sources did not specify whether or not this was a movie or a show, just that an animation featuring DK characters was early in the works.) a big theme park expansion, merchandise, etc. This new game is not just a one off, DK is being taken seriously at the big N again, and that should be good news for fans everywhere.
If this information is accurate, we could potentially see a great Donkey Kong multimedia push in the years to come, whether the animated project turns out to be a movie or a TV show. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa did say recently that the company was looking into expanding more of its IP into animation, and Donkey Kong definitely fits the bill. After all, it’s already done animation before — with utterly mixed results.
