Seth Rogen Donkey Kong

September’s Nintendo Direct was an interesting one and can easily be described as the day the internet exploded. Nintendo fans were reacting to a ton of announcements, such as the now controversial Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, and of course, games such as Bayonetta 3. However, the most surprising reveal has to be the casting choices for the upcoming Super Mario movie by Illumination. During this segment, Seth Rogen was confirmed to be voicing Donkey Kong, but little is known about the character’s involvement. Even if DK doesn’t play a major role in the Mario movie, a report from Giant Freakin Robot suggests that a standalone Donkey Kong movie is in development.

Seth Rogen lands a standalone Donkey Kong movie

In the report, GFR states that “Our source shared that the Donkey Kong solo movie is currently in development at Illumination“. They also suggest that Donkey Kong is merely a “side character” in the Mario movie, but his appearance is intended to introduce the character prior to his standalone adventure. Fred Armisen will be voicing Cranky Kong in the Mario movie, and according to GFR, will be reprising his role in the DK film. If the Super Mario movie is a success, then the chances of this happening are likely, but we will have to wait and see. The world of Donkey Kong has a lot of characters, so they could easily incorporate the likes of Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and maybe even the fan-favorite Chunky Kong.

Everyone was shocked to see the likes of Chris Pratt voicing the Italian plumber, which sparked interesting discussions on social media. A lot of people were excited about Jack Black voicing Bowser though, so it will be interesting to see how they portray the character. The Super Mario movie will be jumping into theatres next year in December 2022. Are you excited for the Super Mario movie, and if so, would you also like to see a standalone Donkey Kong adventure starring Seth Rogen?
