Yesterday, Sega teased the next Sonic Team game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, which did not receive a title but did receive a 2022 release date. No gameplay details at all were revealed about it, so fans were left to shrug their shoulders and wait for new info. However, assorted details from both past and present are now coming together to indicate this new game in the series is called Sonic Rangers, and it might be an open-world game with elements borrowed from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (BOTW).
The likelihood of Sonic Rangers being the title of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2022 game is quite high, due both to circumstantial evidence and the fact that Sega outright referred to the game by that name in a press release to Eurogamer. The evidence for Sonic Rangers being an open-world game with BOTW influence is more interesting though — it comes from a 4chan post from January. The person claimed to have been part of a focus test for a new Sonic game with that name that had an open world.
Alleged notable gameplay elements included completing puzzles and challenges, and defeating enemies rewarded experience to use in a skill tree to gain special attacks. The person also references “Generations-style” “cyberspace” levels, which would agree with the digital effects seen spewing off of Sonic in yesterday’s trailer. The only downside is that the person claimed, despite or maybe because of all the BOTW inspiration, Sonic Rangers was not any fun to play. Of course, the whole point of focus tests and demos is to gather feedback and continue iterating, so there’s nothing to worry about yet, presuming this posting is true. And in fact even if this is all completely true, the game could evolve substantially by the time we actually see it.
There are further 4chan claims, but the above is the one we find most compelling, so that is what we are choosing to share here. Whatever the Sonic Team Sonic the Hedgehog 2022 game turns out to be, there’s no denying that Sonic Rangers and its alleged BOTW influence sounds pretty exciting.
Would you be intrigued to play such a game? Or are you just going off the walls that Sonic Adventure 3 isn’t a thing yet?
