Switch Pro rumors are flying all over the place, so it’s no surprise that we’ve got another to add to the pile. This time, a rumor from an outlet called Economic Daily News states that a new version of the beloved Switch will come armed with a Mini-LED display. According to the report, the display will be packed in by Taiwanese manufacturer Innolux Corporation.
The report implies that Nintendo will join Innolux for the production of Switch Pro screens, breaking off with its current screen suppliers Sharp and JDI.
What’s the advantage to a Mini-LED on a Switch Pro? As opposed to LCD backlights, Mini-LED displays have some functionality in common with OLED lighting. OLED lighting illuminates pixels on an individual basis in a process that prevents light from “spilling” into unlit areas of the screen the way it might with an LCD backlight. Mini-LEDs sort of cross between backlights and OLEDs by using much more precise backlighting. This may improve screen contrast and system battery life – I don’t know about you, but those are two things I’d like in a Switch Pro.
At this point, there’s a lot of smoke surrounding the Switch Pro (or whatever it might be called), but we still can’t be sure that it’s real. That means that we really can’t be sure that this rumor is real. Still, it’s worth noting just how much smoke we’re seeing surrounding Nintendo’s potential console upgrade. The next few months should make for a pretty wild ride.
