Secret of Mana animated short cartoon 60 seconds Benoit TRANCHET Squaresoft Super Nintendo SNES

Being a co-op action RPG in an era where such things were virtually nonexistent, Secret of Mana on Super Nintendo is a cherished classic in Squaresoft’s (now Square Enix) vast library. Fan art for the series is a regular sight on social media, but a full-blown Secret of Mana animated short is a horse of a different color. Director Benoit Tranchet has shared his epic animated work to YouTube, which he says was created between August 2018 and December 2019 in his free time. Mariano Frumento contributed the music, and Oliver Smith contributed the sound design and final mix.

This Secret of Mana animated short essentially showcases the protagonists powering up for the epic final confrontation of the game. So it’s lot of random fire and energy swirling around dramatically for the heck of it. There’s no story to speak of, nor would one expect any over a span of 60 seconds. It’s clearly just a labor of love from Benoit Tranchet and his collaborators — and a really high-quality one at that. It makes you wonder what a larger team with actual financial resources could churn out.

In the Mana world, Trials of Mana just released, for which we have starter tips and a guide for locating L’il Cactus.
