The Shovel Knight saga of games ended last year with the release of Shovel Knight: King of Cards. Now developer Yacht Club Games is saying that it’s still not done with the franchise. In an interview with DualShockers, Sandy Gordon, a Yacht Club Games artist, explained that a direct Shovel Knight sequel is something that is discussed internally quite a lot.
Hope for a new Shovel Knight
Earlier this week the developer announced Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. However, this roguelite puzzler isn’t the only direction the franchise could be taken in. Gordon described the entire Shovel Knight saga to date as complete. These games all released together as Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove.
But he also explained that this is far from the end for Shovel Knight. Yacht Club Games hopes for more from the series in the future, with a direct Shovel Knight sequel, potentially Shovel Knight 2, being a real possibility. Gordon say he is “sure that’ll happen at some point: it’s something we talk about a lot.”
Currently the developer is looking towards the future and the release of next-generation consoles the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Gordon wouldn’t confirm what Yacht Club Games is considering for the future, but it seems as though they’re looking at this new hardware with the Blue Burrower in mind. (At the least, they are hiring for 3D game designers.)
A direct sequel to Shovel Knight would mark a new beginning for the series. It might make more sense for a new saga to begin on next-generation consoles, but we’ll have to wait and see what the developer does in 2021 and beyond.
