Once upon a time, Konami was set to develop Silent Hills for PlayStation 4, a reboot of the Silent Hill franchise helmed by Hideo Kojima and film director Guillermo del Toro. But then Kojima left the company under complicated circumstances, and Konami was swift to axe the project in his absence. Since then, the franchise has gone dormant — until now. It is with boundless excitement that we can share the announcement of Silent Hill Escape, a new slot machine experience.
Yeah, it’s a slot machine. I guess you can scare yourself broke.
Per Yahoo Finance, it boasts “a 49-inch ‘J’ curve display in 4K Ultra HD (UHD).” It goes on to say this:
“Konami’s aim is empowering operators with exceptional entertainment to reach and engage today’s players and beyond,” said Tom Jingoli, executive vice president & chief commercial officer at Konami Gaming, Inc. “We are actively leveraging a combination of top technology, talent, design, and development to deliver a host of new products at this year’s event, through the immediate years to come.”
Basically, it’s a whole lot of meaningless buzzwords, the kind that exist in every press release ever written, so I can’t fault Konami for that. And if slot machines are paying the bills and keeping employees in work, so be it. But if they could be bothered to throw a bone to people who might like a new game in one of their beloved franchises, as opposed to (admittedly pretty nice) retro collections, that would be nice too. Contra: Rogue Corps was a start, but… yeah, let’s just leave it at that. It was a start.
