Young Link may have stopped his apocalyptic plans, but it clearly wasn\’t enough to keep the Skull Kid down. His dastardly opponent has returned as an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

\”Pic of the day. Here’s a new Assist Trophy — the Skull Kid! I repeat, it’s an Assist Trophy, not a new fighter. The characters announced on the website are the fighters!\”

In one fell swoop, Sakurai puts to rest Skull Kid’s viability as a playable character. While we have no idea as to what he will exactly do, we do know he will show up in this form as an assist trophy. A disappointing turn of events for fans of the character who hoped he would appear on the character selection screen instead.

From the position, he may call down the Moon to destroy the stage or change into one of his alternate forms. Then again, yesterday’s update was more evidence that there doesn\’t have to be much reason for why something does whatever it does. That is to say, Skull Kid may be bringing something entirely new to the table or hopes to impress with a variation of his old shenanigans.

What do you think of the new Assist Trophy? Was Skull Kid a better choice as a playable character?
