This year marks the 35th anniversary of the iconic Legend of Zelda franchise. We’re likely to see Nintendo celebrate in various ways, and today we got our first taste of those plans. During the most recent Nintendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD. This Wii game first launched a decade ago on the franchise’s 25th anniversary, so the timing couldn’t be more perfect! You can check out the reveal trailer by clicking below!
Skyward Sword HD unveiled
New and improved on Nintendo Switch
Skyward Sword HD on Nintendo Switch boats improved visuals over the original. The game has always featured a beautiful art style, but Wii quite frankly just couldn’t handle it. Jagged edges sharp enough to poke your eyes out were everywhere. On Switch, it’s much clearer, showing off its true potential.
Skyward Sword heavily featured the Wii Motion Plus in its original incarnation. Puzzles and combat were often designed around precise swings of Link’s blade. On Switch, this precision will be replicated and improved with the Joy-Con controllers. You can also play in handheld mode (including on Switch Lite) with more standard controls, controlling your sword by tilting the right joystick. Speaking of Joy-Cons, Nintendo is also releasing special edition Joy-Cons (pictured above) on the same day!
Breath of the Wild took the Zelda franchise in a much more open-world direction, so Skyward Sword HD may be a jarring shift for new fans. That said, it’s a critically acclaimed gem in its own right, and it features one of the most memorable and emotional stories in franchise history. As the first game in the (ever-confusing and ill-defined) timeline, it’s also an essential experience for immersing yourself in the lore of Hyrule. You can look forward to playing it on Nintendo Switch on July 16.
