Pokémon Smash

The Pokémon franchise celebrated its 25th anniversary on Feb. 27. To celebrate, The Pokémon Company announced a variety of different things during a Pokémon Presents livestream. One area of focus was in-game events for Pokémon Masters, Pokémon Café Mix, and Pokémon GO. Nintendo has now also confirmed that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be celebrating Pokémon later this week.

The next online tournament is called something along the lines of “Pokémon Brawl,” and it will begin later this week on March 5, running for three days in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This event will only allow you to select Pokémon fighters, items, and stages to celebrate the anniversary. Winning matches will also unlock spirits, with more wins reaping better rewards. There are nine Pokémon characters in Smash, so it will be interesting to see how the tournament plays out. You’ll be able to settle which Pokémon is the best in Smash.

Game Freak recently revealed what’s next for the Pokémon video games. Later this year, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will be released for Nintendo Switch. These are “faithful” remakes of the fourth generation of Pokémon, with a mostly retro art style. More interestingly, Game Freak announced a brand new open-world Pokémon game titled Pokémon Legends Arceus. Game Freak has labeled this game as “a new era for Pokémon.”
