Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka: 2021 is a big year for Sonic the Hedgehog

To our collective delight, Sega has been on a revival kick for a number of their older properties as of late. For the Nintendo Switch before year’s end, we’ll be expecting a new Streets of Rage, Panzer Dragoon, and Super Monkey Ball! In AiAi’s case, his new game is none other than a HD remake of his outing for the Nintendo Wii: Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD. If roly-poly monkey madness (or an awesome new theme song) isn’t incentive enough to get players on board for Banana Blitz HD, then this newly revealed perk just might! In a Super Monkey Ball series first, Banana Blitz HD will feature none other than Sonic the Hedgehog as a new playable character.

Way past cool

While Sega has yet to reveal Sonic’s Super Monkey Ball inclusion, trophy-tracking website Exophase.com recently shared the Xbox version’s unlockable achievements; two such achievements, “Way Past Cool” and “Monkey Business,” make explicit references to the Blue Blur.

This instance isn’t the first time Sonic and AiAi crossed paths. The Super Monkey Ball mascot first appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog series through Sonic Riders in 2006. Since then, AiAi would join other Sega characters in crossover games like Sega Superstars Tennis and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. The monkey also made an appearance in Archie Comics’ forty-fifth issue of Sonic Universe.

I was already considering picking up Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD on October 29. I had never played a Super Monkey Ball game and planned on diving into this game as my foray into the series; shameless as it is for me to admit it, featuring Sonic the Hedgehog as a playable character ultimately sealed the deal for me. That said, what do you think of Sonic’s inclusion? Are you keener on buying the game next month because of it? Or were you already sold on the return of Super Monkey Ball alone? Let us know what you think in the comments.
