Netflix pulled a fast one on us today and announced a new Sonic the Hedgehog series. This Sonic Netflix show is a collaboration among Man of Action Entertainment, WildBrain, and Sega. The show will feature 3D animation and premieres in 2022, which is a bit far away, considering the Blue Blur’s 30th anniversary is 2021. The tweet was deleted after not very long, but luckily we have a screenshot right here:
There’s not a lot of information about the new Sonic Netflix show besides this tweet, but we do know that it’s in good hands. Man of Action Entertainment’s first animated series was Ben 10, and it’s also responsible for a few Marvel series, such as Ultimate Spider-Man, Big Hero 6: The Series, and various Avengers shows. WildBrain likewise has a great portfolio of geeky kids shows, like the new Carmen Sandiego and Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu. If that’s not enough for you, both companies also worked together on Mega Man: Fully Charged.
Sonic the Hedgehog has had a number of animated series over the years, with each of them bringing something new to the table. Without any further information, it’s hard to say which direction they’re taking this show, but given its pedigree, I’m reasonably sure that it’ll be a fun romp aimed at kids. One thing I can say, however, is that it’s weird to see one of our favorite blue icons repping red. Hopefully when Netflix posts about this again, it will include at least a morsel of footage.
