We’ve known since May that a Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel is in development at Paramount, and pre-production is likely going well since the movie is apparently set to start filming in a few months. Via Sonic Stadium, a filing with the Director’s Guild of Canada website indicates that production of a project named “Emerald Hill” will occur between March 15, 2021 and May 10, 2021. Emerald Hill is the codename for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel, as the filing details a budget of “over $20M” and lists Abraham Fraser as the production manager; Fraser was part of the first film’s production. Emerald Hill is of course also an iconic location in the franchise.
The movie doesn’t have a ton of confirmed details yet. Jeff Fowler is returning as director with Pat Casey and Josh Miller returning as writers. Actors for the film have not been confirmed, but stars of the first Sonic movie have expressed interest in returning in the past, even Jim Carrey. Plot details are also nonexistent, but whatever happens, it’s pretty likely that Tails will be part of the narrative this time around. Whether Knuckles and/or the Chaos Emeralds might come into the picture remains to be seen, but considering how financially successful the first film was, there is no need to rush things. Paramount can milk this for some years to come.
What do you hope to see in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel?
