Earlier this year, the internet had a collective panic attack over the unsightly design of Sonic the Hedgehog in his upcoming live-action film debut. The blue bomber was cursed with human teeth, spindly legs, and terrifying eyes that even a mother hedgehog would struggle to love. Surprisingly, Paramount Pictures earnestly responded to the uproar of fan feedback over the flawed design. They delayed the Sonic movie until February of next year and even enlisted the help of Sonic Mania artist Tyson Hesse to oversee re-designing the iconic Sega mascot.
Today, at long last, Paramount released a new trailer for the Sonic movie and showed off the fruits of their animators’ labor. Gone is the horror show from before, replaced with a hedgehog that looks far closer to what gamers have come to know and love over the last 28 years.
As such, our friends at Nintendo Life put together a full gallery of images comparing the original, cursed design from the first trailer with this game-accurate and cuddly redesign from the newest one. A few of the scenes from the first trailer for the Sonic movie even show up again in the latest trailer. These give us an easy way to directly compare how Sonic looks in his updated form in a bunch of familiar scenes.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is slated to release on February 14, 2020. Are you excited for it following Sonic’s new design? Or were you always looking forward to the Blue Blur’s journey to the silver screen? Let us know!
