Spiritfarer Lily Update

Back in September of last year, Nintendo Enthusiast reviewed the delightful Spiritfarer for Switch. It affected me a great deal with its heavy story about sending souls to the afterlife, and its themes have stayed with me ever since completion. Thankfully, I wasn’t the only one touched by the indie’s heartfelt narrative. Developer Thunder Lotus has announced the title has sold 500,000 copies worldwide. To celebrate, the devs have launched a free update to the game as of today. Named The Lily Update, the DLC adds Lily the Butterfly Spirit to the colorful cast of Spiritfarer.

Spiritfarer’s Lily Update also includes improvements to the base game

Here is a short teaser on what appearance Lily takes:

Gorgeous. I love how the little butterflies form this character. It’s an eye-catching design.

Spiritfarer Creative Director, Nicolas Guérin, had this to say about today’s celebration:

As ever, the updates we’re bringing to Spiritfarer this year are all about the fans – those who helped make this our studio’s most popular game ever. We wanted to keep the Lily Update small, to address the single most common feedback we’ve received from players since launch: fans want to know more about Stella and what, ultimately, her quest is about. It’s the emotional core of the game, so we wanted to get it right; Lily offers a sweet and personal window onto who Stella is, and we hope the players like what we’ve done with this update. The 500,000 units milestone is huge for us, and felt like a fitting time to add Lily – meanwhile, we’re putting the finishing touches on the more gameplay-heavy updates to come. Stay tuned!

It sounds like Lily has a deep connection to Stella, the main protagonist. She does call her “sis” in the trailer, so I’m almost positive she’s a sibling. I bet her tale will bring back the waterworks!

Thunder Lotus also mentioned The Lily Update adds better local co-op play and various bug fixes. In addition, two other free updates will follow later this year.
