Square Enix buyout

Yesterday, a report from CTFN via Bloomberg Japan claimed multiple buyers were supposedly interested in purchasing Square Enix. However, Square Enix has now released a statement denying all aspects of the buyout report. Here is the full statement:

Bloomberg has reported today that there is interest from several buyers to acquire Square Enix. However, this report is not based on any announcement by SQUARE ENIX HOLDINGS CO., LTD. We do not consider selling off the company or any part of its businesses, nor have we received any offer from any third party to acquire the company or any part of its businesses.

Buyouts are becoming more common in the games industry. For instance, Microsoft recently acquired ZeniMax Media, owner of Bethesda and other recognizable studios. For the time being, it looks like Square Enix will continue to operate independently.

Industry analysts were discussing the idea of a Square Enix takeover on Twitter, with David Gibson suggesting that the company was “under pressure because of the failure of Avengers” but that this is more about “bankers trying to drum up business.”

Despite all this, Square Enix is still doing well with Final FantasyKingdom Hearts, and other franchises. However, the recently released Balan Wonderworld was also a commercial failure. At the moment, Square Enix is doing just fine, but we’ll have to wait and see whether or not these buyout rumous eventually become true.
