Steve, Alex, Zombie, and Enderman from Minecraft are joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the second character of Fighters Pass 2. Masahiro Sakurai appeared on stream to explain that, when thinking about new fighters, they just don’t pick ideas from a hat. Nintendo gives them ideas. Sakurai said that Nintendo said, “‘Surely you can put Minecraft in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?’ while peering at me over their glasses. They make it sound easy.” Graphics, motion, and sound were easy, in fact. Programming the character to fit into the roster was a “massive challenge” though. Existing stages had to be reworked to incorporate blocks and biomes. Making his physical attacks and short reach work was very difficult as well.
On Saturday, Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. ET / 7:30 a.m. PT, Masahiro Sakurai will hold a presentation, “Steve & Alex,” prior to Minecraft Live where he will explain more about Minecraft in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, meaning more details on Steve, Alex, Zombie, and Enderman. Ideally, we will get a release date then, in addition to more details about the new level being inserted into the game.
What do you think about the inclusion of Minecraft‘s Steve in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate after all this time and after so many rumors including him after the past couple years? Fighters Pass 2 seems to have as many surprises as the first, in any case.
