The classic trading card game Magic: The Gathering has been dipping its toes into licensed partnerships, and we’ve seen cards based on The Walking Dead and most recently Dungeons & Dragons. Wizards of the Coast also announced products based on Warhammer 40,000 and Lord of the Rings. Now, at its Magic Showcase 2021, it announced two new partnerships for Magic: The Gathering (MTG): Fortnite and Street Fighter.
These two products will be Secret Lair drops: collections of a small handful of cards, available only for a limited time. The Fortnite set will be reprints from Magic: The Gathering‘s existing history featuring art from the video game. The Street Fighter set, on the other hand, will be MTG cards based on characters from the fighting game. They showed off art for the Chun-Li card, which in fact does have “multikicker” (meaning paying extra mana as you play the card allows you to do extra stuff when it comes into play).
Both of these sets will be part of Magic: The Gathering‘s Universes Beyond product line. Wizards of the Coast is doing a lot to get people who don’t traditionally play MTG interested in slinging cardboard, and I’m sure Fortnite and Street Fighter will get some eyes from the video game world looking at the TCG world. I can’t wait to slot some of these cards into decks. They should be coming some time next year.
