Super Mario Maker v2 update

One of the most exciting things about the original Super Mario Maker was the updates. The base game was fun, but each update brought new tools, enemies, and power-ups. Super Mario Maker 2, on the other hand, has a ton of content right out of the box, so it hasn’t seen any new features since its release in June. The upcoming Version 2 update, releasing on Dec. 5, will change that. It’s bringing a bunch of new features to the game, including a new mode, new enemies, and a power-up that turns Mario into Link.

Let’s get the biggest thing out of the way first. The Master Sword is going to be appearing in a Super Mario game. Taking the Sword of Evil’s Bane in hand, Mario becomes Link, the Hero of Hyrule. This is the most versatile power-up I’ve ever seen Mario grab. As Link, you’ll have access to the sword swing, dash attack, downward thrust, defensive shield, bombs, and a bow you can aim in three directions. The Master Sword is only available in Super Mario Bros. mode and will surely be featured in approximately 86 bajillion stages once the Version 2 update hits.

But wait, there’s more!

There’s some other cool stuff in the Version 2 update as well! It’s been a while since a few minor features were added, so this one is pretty beefy. The announcement highlighted several new enemies and course parts for players to make use of.

First, enemies. Spike is the little green dude who horks up spiked balls and hurls them at Mario. Placing one in a snow stage will turn the ammo into snowballs. Pokey the cactus also makes an appearance. It has a variable height and will become a snowman in the snow stage. It will also fly around when placed in a night stage.

Next comes some new course parts. Frozen coins are encased in ice, but anything involving fire frees them. P-blocks pop up when Mario punches a P-switch, providing new puzzle and platform possibilities. Dash blocks are also coming, but only in Super Mario 3D World stages. They can give Mario a running boost or speed up the Koopa Troopa car.

Finally, there’s a new mode coming to Super Mario Maker 2. In Ninji Speedruns, you’ll compete against other players for prizes and glory. While running as fast as you can through stages, the ghosts of other players – represented by Ninjis – will race alongside you, letting you see where you fall in the pack. The stages are all built by the team at Nintendo, so at least you won’t have to worry about Kaizo Blocks.

The Version 2 update hits on Thursday, Dec. 5. Will you be adding Pokey to your levels? Going to race against Ninji ghosts? Or, like me, will you be playing every Link stage you can get your hands on? Let us know!
