super mario odyssey

The 2020s are only a few days away, and the door to the 2010s is closing quickly. Among many other things, this past decade was an incredible era in gaming. In the games department, Nintendo had a heck of a run, themselves: the tail end of the Wii era enjoyed lasting classics like Super Mario Galaxy 2The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and Xenoblade. The Wii U managed some awesome games like Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The 3DS continued the DS line’s success with the long-deserved Western emergence of Fire Emblem as well as a new era of handheld greatness from the Big N, capitalized by games like Super Mario 3D Land and the criminally forgotten Kid Icarus: Uprising. Finally, the Switch closed out the decade in style, blowing us all away with Nintendo’s most consistent and impressive output in a long, long time. There were so many amazing games to choose from, and it’s hard to select just one, but today I’m asking you all to pick your favorite Nintendo title from the past decade.

I have to go with Super Mario Odyssey. In a colorful, expansive, and whimsical adventure, the game returned my favorite series to its sorely-missed exploration-based form that had been missing ever since Super Mario Sunshine. Coming in the first year after the disappointing Wii U era, Super Mario Odyssey combined with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to deliver the return to prominence I had been holding out hope for for a long, long time. For me, Super Mario Odyssey marked a new era at Nintendo, one defined by a contagious momentum that still has not slowed down.

What was your Nintendo game of the decade? They started off strong and, for the most part, kept up the pace throughout the decade. As a result, there are dozens of games to choose from, all worthy of recognition. Which is your favorite?
