super mario odyssey

Thanksgiving is winding down, and by this point in the day, many of us have wrapped up with our evening feast and settled down with family and football. A central spirit to the holiday involves reflection and giving thanks for what we have and love, so let’s apply that to the hobby we all share in common, video games. What’s a game you’re particularly thankful for? Perhaps it’s a sequel or spiritual successor you never thought would exist, a title that brings your friends or family together, or just a childhood favorite.

There are so many games worth spotlighting, but today, I’ll shout out a sequel that falls into that first category. Super Mario Odyssey was cathartic to play–it was the exploration-based collectathon follow-up to Super Mario Sunshine that I had been wanting for well over a decade. While I loved the Super Mario Galaxy games and Super Mario 3D World, their drift towards standard platformers was disheartening, and I was convinced that Nintendo would ever revisit the sprawling, packed environments from the first two 3D entries in the series. Super Mario Odyssey was exactly what I had been dreaming of–it even came darn close to unseating Super Mario Sunshine as my favorite Nintendo game.

What game are you thankful for? What does it mean to you? There are obviously plenty of great ones to choose from, so tell all in the comments.
