Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania

The official Twitter account for the Super Monkey Ball series has confirmed two additional playable characters for Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania. According to the Tweet, monkeys Jam and Jet will make their return after initially appearing in Super Monkey Ball: Step and Roll and Super Monkey Ball 3D, respectively. The monkeys are joining a fairly recognizable cast that is bolstered by original Super Monkey Ball characters, Sonic the Hedgehog, and literal video game consoles.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania is thus, notably, the first occasion that Jam and Jet will be able to roll around on levels that aren’t preposterously bad. Jam originally appeared in Super Monkey Ball: Step and Roll, which is awful. Jet appeared in Super Monkey Ball 3D. Also awful. Both characters returned in the oft-overlooked, surprisingly quality Vita title Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz, but they were only playable in minigames and could not be used on the main marble rolling levels.

Characters like Jam and Jet aren’t well-known even among series fans, and they don’t mean much for the game as a whole beyond a treat for fans who have stuck with this series through thick and thin. The good news, though, is that that sort of treatment is exactly what Super Monkey Ball needs after two decades of neglect.

As we slowly approach its October release date, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania is looking better and better. The fun roster full is full of fan-favorites from every dark corner of this franchise’s history. As we learn more and more about the game, it truly does appear to be a faithful return to form for a series that lost its way many, many years ago.
