Once again demonstrating that it is the most random video game company on Earth, Nintendo has suddenly added five new Sega Genesis games to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, including Altered Beast, ToeJam & Earl, Dynamite Headdy, Sword of Vermilion, and Thunder Force II. Nintendo has released a December 2021 Game Updates video to highlight these five Sega Genesis games, and it’s certainly a diverse selection.
Altered Beast is a not-great but still famous sidescroller. (“Rise from your grave!” is honestly one of the only things I remember about it.) ToeJam & Earl is a cult classic action game that you probably just have to play to wrap your head around. Dynamite Headdy is a platformer developed by Treasure, one of the revered developers of the genre. Sword of Vermilion is a unique role-playing game from Sega that uses different gameplay perspectives for different things, and it was well received in its era. And Thunder Force II is a space shooter from Technosoft that delivers exactly what you would expect, in a good way. Of these five games, only Thunder Force II is unavailable in spectacular Nintendo Switch compilation title Sega Genesis Classics.
With Altered Beast, ToeJam & Earl, Dynamite Headdy, Sword of Vermilion, and Thunder Force II abruptly joining the Sega Genesis lineup in Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, which of the five games do you plan to play first? Meanwhile, Paper Mario recently joined the Nintendo 64 lineup, and Banjo-Kazooie is next in January.
