Overwatch is a fun game players have been enjoying on console and PC, but what about those of us that want to play on the go? After the recent unveiling of Diablo III coming to Switch, questions regarding other Activision Blizzard properties making the jump to Nintendo’s latest came up: specifically, Overwatch and StarCraft II.
Diablo III Senior Producer Pete Stilwell opened up about bringing the game to Switch, touching on how the porting process was easy for his team due to past console port experience, as well as how it is a great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of Nintendo’s machine. Then he dropped this bombshell while speaking to GameSpot about a Switch Overwatch port:
Anything is within the realm of possibility. Our team was given the task to work on this. If [Overwatch developer] Team 4 picks up that endeavour, that’s on them. As of right now Diablo is our only focus on Switch.
When he was pressed about Overwatch running on Switch hardware, Pete said, “Yes, it is feasible.”
That’s…encouraging, at least! Maybe one day we’ll all be playing Lucioball together: PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and not PlayStation 4.
On the topic of StarCraft II hitting Nintendo’s hybrid, Pete was less hopeful:
The N64 version of StarCraft was cool but you had to change the game quite a bit to make it work properly on console. StarCraft II is next level requirements from how much dexterity you need with a mouse and keyboard, so I think that would have been a very difficult port. It would have [to] change the core gameplay.
Well, the Switch does not come with a mouse and board, so it sounds like StarCraft II On The Subway Edition isn’t happening unless Blizzard spends a ton of resources rebuilding it from the ground up. At least we have Ganondorf in a Diablo game coming soon!
