Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass DLC trade possible, not required purchase

Today’s Pokémon Direct revealed the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass DLC. Game Freak revealed that over 200 Pokémon will appear in the new game areas in the DLC, including “some familiar Pokémon that didn’t appear in the Galar region.” There’s been controversy surrounding the amount of included Pokémon in the game since its release, so this comes as a step closer to the game that some fans of the franchise desired.

However, if you’re worried that you won’t be able to use any newly added Pokémon if you don’t purchase the Expansion Pass, worry not. Nintendo explained that you’ll be able to get them through other means, such as trading.

Pokémon legends return

Here is precisely what the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass press release has to say on the subject:

Free updates are also planned for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield to coincide with the release of these expansions. Updates are scheduled for the same days that The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra expansions are released. Each of these updates will enable players who haven’t purchased an Expansion Pass to receive Pokémon that will be added via The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra expansions through means such as trading.

Moves will still be locked behind the paywall, and it might be a little difficult to get other players to trade you the new Legendaries, but it’ll still be possible to “catch ’em all.”

Will you be picking up the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass? Or is this yet another misstep from Game Freak? Let us know in the comments.
