WINGSPAN for Nintendo Switch

Strategy games aren’t anything new, but this one will take you soaring in a different kind of way. Wingspan is the new card-based strategy game from indie studio Monster Couch. This is every birdwatcher’s dream game, as well as a title fit for anyone who wants something to sit back and relax with.

Wingspan allows you to become either a researcher, bird watcher, ornithologist or collector and  “discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves.” There are 170 unique bird species featured in Wingspan, with support for up to five players to play locally. Wingspan features an animated artstyle that brings the card-based action to life.

If you’d like to take a look at how this looks in action, here’s the release trailer:

As you can see from the gameplay video, there are a lot of mechanics being featured to really flesh out this party-style experience. This certainly isn’t your average game by any means, but it’s just another reminder of the wild, wild west that is the world of indie releases. Titles like this are able to be made only because there are passionate small studios out there who are willing to actually turn these ideas into real products, and now there’s a marketplace for them. Wingspan is actually based on a real board game, which received the 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres board game award. So, if the virtual version is as any good as its physical counterpart, then you can expect it to be quite the experience.

Wingspan is available right now on the Nintendo Switch eShop for just $17.99. This is the introductory price, however. Once that period has expired, then the game will be available for $19.99; which is still a reasonable price for such a title like this.
