Tetris 99 Pokémon Sword and Shield Maximus Cup event

Tetris 99 has been on an absolute roll with their themed Maximus Cup weekend events. Just last week, players who logged into the free-to-play Tetris battle royale experience were able to earn a special Luigi’s Mansion 3 theme to apply to their game. Now, dedicated T-spinners around the globe can strap in again to earn a Pokémon Sword and Shield special theme during this weekend’s Maximus Cup.

Running from today until 1:59 a.m. EST on Nov. 11, the latest Maximus Cup event for Tetris 99 runs like all the others. Load up the game and hop into a standard match and you’ll see the entire game decked out in Pokémon style. The background shows off a beautiful vista full of lush, tall grass while the Tetris board features a logo of Poké Balls clashing. You’ll even notice little Poké Ball engravings in each of the blocks of your Tetrominoes (I say, having just googled “what is the plural form of those Tetris piece things”). Coolest of all, though, is that each of the 99 players you’re battling with is framed as a different, random Pokémon that you “capture” as each one of them gets eliminated from the match.

It’s a cute theme full of little nods that fans will appreciate, and if you score 100 points during the weekend Maximus Cup event, you’ll get to keep the theme and apply it for future use anytime while you play Tetris 99.

Tetris 99 is available right now for free on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers.
