Cuphead is a cartoon that you can play, which is something that has been claimed of many video games over the years, but Cuphead is the first to fit the meaning categorically. It is outrageously, phenomenally beautiful and utterly faithful to its 1930s-inspired art style in the vein of Fleischer Studios. So basically, if ever there were a game that demanded an art book, it is this one — and now it’s coming. Studio MDHR’s The Art of Cuphead is available for preorder and set to release on March 17, 2020. Oh, and for the heck of it, Cuphead in Carnival Chaos: A Cuphead Novel and Cuphead Volume 1: Comic Capers & Curios are coming too.
The Art of Cuphead is exactly what you want it to be, a compendium of beautiful art with explanations of what inspired it all, and it’s coming in a limited edition package:
Each page of this curated artwork collection is designed to capture the vintage look and feel of the Thirties. Take a gander at the game’s traditional hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation. Peek at the concepts, production work, and early ideas that went into the making of Cuphead’s characters, bosses, stages and more, including never-before-seen content from the upcoming DLC! Relive the most cherished and challenging moments of Cuphead and Mugman’s adventure to reclaim their souls from The Devil, all in a way you’ve never seen before. Guided by personal insights from game directors Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, take a one-of-a-kind trip through the Inkwell Isles and discover an all-new appreciation for Cuphead’s animation style and challenging retro gameplay.
Sign me up! But if The Art of Cuphead isn’t enough for you, there’s plenty more inspired by Studio MDHR’s creation where that came from. The “middle-grade” kids have an illustrated novel, Cuphead in Carnival Chaos: A Cuphead Novel, to look forward to, apparently the first in the series. And lastly, there is Cuphead Volume 1: Comic Capers & Curios, the beginning of a graphic novel series that should appeal to all ages.
Add in the already announced The Cuphead Show! on Netflix and Studio MDHR has a veritable empire on its hands. And you know what? They earned it! Let us know which of these books you’ll be preordering, if any.
