After a few months of little to no news about Pokémon Sword and Shield’s second expansion, The Crown Tundra, we were treated this morning to a whole presentation about the upcoming content. Arguably the biggest news to come from this presentation was the unveiling of the pack’s launch date. The Crown Tundra launches in two short weeks on Thursday, October 22, well within the original Fall 2020 window.
Whereas the first expansion, The Isle of Armor, was focused on growth, The Crown Tundra is based on exploration as its theme. One big way in which this theme is being incorporated is through the brand new Dynamax Adventures feature. Prior to The Crown Tundra, Pokémon Dens were simply something you interacted with. In Dynamax Adventures though, you and up to 3 friends can venture into them to explore the caves beneath. In doing so, you have a chance to find and catch legendaries from past Pokémon titles!
Including these legendaries, over 100 Pokémon are returning to the Pokédex with this update, alongside brand new legendaries like Calyrex and Galarian forms for the legendary bird trio and Slowking. Just as with The Isle of Armor, you don’t need The Crown Tundra to access this expanded roster, as you can get them via other means such as trading.
If battling is more your speed, you’ll also be able to participate in the new Galarian Star tournament after your adventures in this pack. This tournament has you team up with one of the other characters you’ve met throughout your adventures to face other pairs in a 2v2 showdown to find out who is truly the very best. Depending on the pairs you create, you may even discover a whole new side to your favorite characters!
If you’ve already purchased the appropriate expansion pass for your version of Pokémon Sword or Shield, you’ll be able to access this content right away on October 9th after updating your game. If you’re still looking to get the expansion pass (which includes both expansions), it’s available in the Nintendo eShop for $29.99. Just be sure to get the version that matches your game!
After my experience with The Isle of Armor, I have high hopes that The Crown Tundra will continue to elevate the Pokémon experience. Are you looking forward to The Crown Tundra? Which aspect of the pack are you most excited about?
