For months, we have been reporting on Warui Ousama to Rippa na Yuusha, which can be translated as The Evil King and the Honorable Hero. The game released on June 24 in Japan, and now, Nippon Ichi Software / NIS America has officially announced that the game is coming West on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in early 2022 as The Cruel King and the Great Hero, with preorders open already.
The Cruel King and the Great Hero is about Yuu, who wants to become a hero and was raised by the Dragon King. However, unbeknownst to her, the Dragon King was once a horrible threat to the world that was defeated and stripped of its power by Yuu’s father. The Dragon King and Yuu’s father then became unexpected friends, but one day, Yuu’s father showed up mortally wounded, needing the Dragon King to raise his daughter for him. (Basically, imagine a more touching version of when Piccolo helped raise Gohan for Goku in Dragon Ball Z.) It definitely has flavor in common with creator Sayaka Oda’s previous game, The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince.
The game promises “a charming soundtrack, artistic inspirations drawn from children’s storybooks, and classic 2D scroller visuals,” along with monsters and puzzles to overcome and many hidden items to collect for the in-game gallery, like behind-the-scenes illustrations and character profiles.
If you want to preorder The Cruel King and the Great Hero, there are Storybook and Treasure Trove special editions.
