The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is the latest in a long line of success stories from one of gaming’s most prestigious franchises. While the Zelda series has had its hiccups and divisive titles, its heights have produced generation-defining games that will forever be remembered among the best of the best. There are clear standouts like A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Breath of the Wild, certainly, but nearly every main entry in the series has its diehard fans and its detractors. What The Legend of Zelda game do you think is the best?

For me, The Wind Waker stands tall as my favorite, narrowly holding off Breath of the Wild. Wind Waker is one of the most complete video game adventures ever made. Very few games can match the mesmerizing feel of exploring the open sea, discovering hidden islands and secrets, and setting out through daunting fortresses, lively villages, and sprawling dungeons amidst the beautiful cel-shading and soundtrack. There are plenty of great choices within The Legend of Zelda as a series, but Wind Waker was the only title in which I found no lull whatsoever — it hits on all fronts and leaves me thoroughly awestruck from start to finish.

Which Zelda game do you think is the best? Why? Is it the seemingly endless landscape in Breath of the Wild? The time-traveling awesomeness of Ocarina of Time? That lovely, relaxing top-down gameplay in A Link to the Past? Or do you prefer one of the other Zelda entries? Sound off with your choice in the comments.
