The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time beta footage found on VHS tape

Recently the YouTube channel Hard4Games released a video showing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time beta footage. The video looks at a VHS tape, previously supplied by Blockbuster in Brazil as a preorder bonus for the game, with the beta footage on it.

Rough cut

Some of the contents of this The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time beta footage have never been seen in video form before. Most of the information was already known, but previously we’d only had screenshots of the game in beta form. The video contains two sections, one of which is beta gameplay, while the other is a promotional advertisement for the game. This advertisement was probably shown on television around the time of the game’s release.

One of the best highlights in the footage is the smiling animation for Ganondorf, which is rougher and toothier in this beta footage. We can also see the music note animation that Link would perform upon learning each new song. These didn’t make it into the final game. Finally, the Triforce is upside down in the Temple of Time in the beta footage for some reason. The Triforce obviously isn’t new to the Zelda franchise with Ocarina of Time, so it’s interesting that it was presented in this way at all throughout development.
