Nintendo quietly dropped a Direct on us this morning. Exciting! It contained news we were all waiting for, though perhaps not in the form we would have wanted. One such announcement is that the next DLC character coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be from ARMS! Nintendo did not reveal which combatant this will be, however. That news will come in June, and the character will also release that same month. Presumably, this would have coincided with E3 before it was canceled.
That said, according to the announcer, “this fighter is a bit unusual thanks to those extendable arms, so we’ll have to extend our development time, too.” It’s possible that development on all Smash Ultimate DLC has been impacted by the global coronavirus pandemic. At the very least, it’s likely affected this announcement. Perhaps footage wasn’t ready in time for this Direct, so they instead gave us a tiny tantalizing taste of what’s to come. We hope that everyone on the dev team (and all of our readers, and the whole world, really) is staying as safe as possible in this trying time.
Finally, a demo of ARMS is coming to Nintendo Switch Online members. From today until April 6, you can play the whole game for free if you’re a subscriber. It’s a great way to try out this unique fighting game, and we fully recommend giving it a shot. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, sure, but those who like it tend to love it. At the very least, it will add some variety to your time self-isolating.
Which ARMS character do you think it will be? Are you looking forward to a new, strategic, ranged character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Let us know!
