The Walking Dead: The Final Season - Telltale Games

Telltale’s The Walking Dead: The Final Season may not be over quite yet. If the Twitter account of the doomed studio is any indication, there may be hope for the conclusion of the series.

Recently, the video game community was rocked with the news of a massive workforce reduction at Telltale Games followed by the announcement of the studio’s imminent closure. Telltale Games had a handful of projects lined up and currently in production, many of which, will likely not see the light of day. However, the project that was on everyone’s mind was unquestionably the final season of Telltale’s award-winning series, The Walking Dead.

The first episode was just released on Aug. 14 followed by the second episode scheduled to release this week, Sept. 25. From the social and video games media frenzy that ensued, it seemed that the project was destined to remain incomplete with the series’ end being the second episode. Many fans, myself included, were distraught that Clem’s story would end so abruptly and under the terrible conditions of a studio closure. The long hours, the huge effort, and narratively-crafted work of art so many developers invested in would be an unfinished tapestry.

Broken hearts all around

Melissa Hutchinson, the actress behind the voice of Clementine, tweeted her statement on the tragic news and conveyed exactly what everyone was feeling. “To my knowledge, they will release Episode 2 and then that will be it. It hurts me that you, the fans, will not get to see Clems journey through to the end. It hurts me that all the insanely talented people who made this game, wont get to see all their hard work played out, and are instead thrust into having to now having to look for work. It hurts to know that all the extremely talented actors who lent voice to this final season, wont get to experience the final ending of one of the best damn game titles in the history of games.”

A glimmer of hope

In a stroke of luck (and hope) for the fans and the many creators who poured their hearts into this series, the official Telltale Games Twitter account stated that a solution to bringing episodes 3 and 4 to fruition is being looked at. “Multiple potential partners” have entered the picture in hopes of salvaging the conclusion of the series. Nothing, of course, is certain. But for fans who were taken back by the abrupt closure and sudden end to the series, this might set minds at ease that a solution is being sought out.
